Driver assessment and driver training from Safedrive
Around 1/3 of all road deaths occur 'at work'. In 2009 that amounted
to over 800 people killed 'at work'. Did you know that
driving for work is the third most dangerous (likely to result in
death) occupation in the UK, beaten only by deep sea fishing and
mining and more dangerous than construction or agriculture ?
Every business that uses fork lift trucks knows
that it must provide training for drivers of these vehicles. Every
business that uses hot, sharp, heavy . . . . in fact ANY activity
that may be dangerous must provide training, guards, protective
equipment, risk assessments, method statements . . . . in order to
reduce and wherever possible remove risk.
And yet many businesses fail even to make a
regular check on their employees driving licences let alone provide
any kind of driver training or driver assessment (which is actually a legal
requirement) - giving their employees what amount to high speed, 1
ton killing machines and ordering them to drive on roads containing
30 million other high speed, 1 ton killing
machines.
Even fewer have any kind of Road Risk
Management plan.
if your business requires anyone to drive as part of their work,
in either a company provided vehicle or their own you have an
obligation under several Acts to provide regular driver training and
driver assessment. The most relevant being :-
Health & Safety at Work Act
1974
Management of Health & Safety at Work regulations 1999
Corporate Homicide & Corporate Manslaughter Acts - came into
effect in April 2008
Health & Safety (offences) Act 2008 - came into effect in Feb
2009
So, other than potentially closing your
business, facing an unlimited fine, being forced to publicise
nationally at your own expense your failings and of course
personally imprisoned what do you and your business stand to gain ?
Lower road risk - leading to fewer insurance claims and
repair bills
Less risk to your drivers - meaning less days 'lost'
Less driver stress & anger - driving needn't be a chore.
Lower fuel costs - an immediate improvement to your
'bottom line'
Lower servicing costs - another improvement to your
'bottom line'
Better company image - fewer "I've just been cut up
by one of your vehicles" calls.
Training is very tax efficient - pay less tax
Get to go home alive - don't
get killed whilst driving for work. |
