Man faces £650,000
speeding fine
Setting what is believed to be a
world record - though not one many people would wish to better a
Swedish man whilst driving in Switzerland has been given a speeding fine that amounts to
approximately £650,000 - yes, six hundred and fifty thousand pounds.
The speed limit on Swiss
motorways is 120 kmh (appx 75mph) whilst the driver of the Mercedes
Benz SLS, claimed to be capable of speeds of up to 197mph, was
caught doing 186mph. Swiss prosecutors said that this was the
fastest anyone had ever been clocked in Switzerland.
As has been proven by assorted
motoring magazines and TV shows most cameras do not react fast
enough to 'catch' a vehicle travelling at more than appx 125 mph so
this driver was able to go through several without being 'flashed'
twice. The two flashes are used to calculate the distance travelled
over a set period of time.
This record breaking achievement
presumably won't make the 37 year old driver, whose name has not been
released too happy though as in Switzerland fines are calculated taking into account
the earnings of the defendant. The potential is for up to 300 days
of fines at the equivalent of just over £2,100 per day.
In his defence the driver claimed that the
vehicle had recently been fitted with a new speedometer and that the
new one must have been 'faulty'
It is worth considering that at
this speed he would have needed appx 1/3 of a mile to stop.
Nice try. |
